In September 2023, an internal Microsoft document was inadvertently shared during the FTC vs. Microsoft legal proceedings, leading to the leak of a new Xbox controller codenamed "Sebile." "A device configured to generate haptic feedback is disclosed. The device includes a housing, a connector, and a haptic motor. The connector includes a mount end coupled to the housing and a distal end spaced away from the mount end. The haptic motor is coupled to the distal end of the connector. Activation of the haptic motor causes the haptic motor to move relative to the housing to generate the haptic feedback."
Windows Central has corroborated these findings, stating that the Sebile controller remains on track for release. However, it is now expected to debut alongside the next-generation Xbox console. Unlike Sony, which is reportedly working on a PlayStation 5 Pro, Microsoft has chosen to forgo a mid-generation hardware refresh, focusing entirely on their next console generation. Xbox president Sarah Bond has teased that this new console will deliver the most significant technological leap ever seen in the gaming industry.
Adding to the intrigue, rumors suggest Microsoft may launch its next console earlier than Sony, potentially as soon as 2026. If true, this could give Xbox a competitive edge, with the Sebile controller arriving in tandem with the new hardware. Meanwhile, the PlayStation 6 is believed to be targeting a 2028 release, leaving the door open for Microsoft to gain a head start in the next console generation.
